Welcome to International Students in Melbourne
Welcome to Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
****CHANGE OF PURPOSE****
As several Welcome events have been held for International Students, we decided to host a FAREWELL PARTY for international students about to return to their home country on Wednesday 28 October 2009.
Register now or just turn up on the night with your student ID card.
1. Special Event to Welcome International Students to Melbourne

On 21 March 2005, Newcomers Network hosted a Welcome to Melbourne Ceremony at the University of Melbourne for Academics, Educators and International Students.

On 17 August 2006, Newcomers Network hosted the Victorian International Students Summit at Parliament House in Melbourne

and a follow up event to the International Student Summit at the University of Melbourne on 20 September 2006.
Over the years, we have had hundreds of international students attend our regular monthly Welcome to Melbourne events, but we would like to bring even more students together from different educational facilities across Victoria for another official Welcome to Melbourne event.
We are still in the early planning stages so more information about special guests will be posted on this page in the future.
We also host free Living, Working and Networking in Melbourne events, the Christmas Day Picnic Lunch on 25 December 2009 and the Welcome Home Party for Australian Expatriates and Repatriates on 30 December 2009.
You may also like to visit the City of Melbourne International Students page and see their events and programs (lots of good information).

Victorian Concession Card Coalition
Hi
I’m writing on behalf of the Victorian Concession Card Coalition. We are a group of organisations and individuals attempting to make the case for public transport concessions for International and Postgraduate students. In the case of International Students particularly, lack of access to public transport concessions, combined with the 20-hour work restriction on student visas, is a huge burden.
It has repeatedly figured at the head of surveys listing major grievances International Students have while studying in Australia. The state government here seems to be trying desperately to look truly concerned about the plight of international students in particular, and more recently a series of the private colleges in Melbourne, as well as Universities Australia, have expressed support for the introduction of public transport concessions to all students.
Despite what may be the cynical motives of the private colleges for expressing such support, we believe it is an indication that a determined campaign highlighting the discrimination students face by being denied access to concessions could well force the state government's hand. We are in the process of garnering support for a public campaign and petitioning for concession card rights, against the blatant discrimination international students face.
The campaign is to culminate in a public rally on September 2nd in the Melbourne CBD. I was wondering if you or your organisation were interested in supporting or contributing to the campaign? We meet every Monday at 5:30 in the RMIT cafeteria on Swanston st. in the City to plan and co-ordinate upcoming events, there is also a mailing list for those interested in the campaign at
